Garbage

  • Properly dispose of garbage. Pick up after yourself!
  • When camping, hiking, on a picnic or driving down the highway, do not throw garbage carelessly. Animals will most likely try to eat it. Many animals suffer cruel deaths trying to get food remnants from small or plastic containers.

Water Conservation

  • Wait until the dishwasher is full before running it to save up to 10,000 litres of water a year. To further cut your water use, choose the short cycle or install a high-efficiency model.
  • Don't let the water run while you're cleaning fruits and vegetables. Partially fill the sink with water to save up to 5 litres of water each time.
  • Turn taps off tightly so they do not drip. If you find a leak repair it promptly. One leak can waste several thousand litres of water per year.
  • When washing dishes by hand, do not run water continuously. Instead, wash dishes in a partially filled sink and then rinse them in a separate sink or bowl, or by using the spray attachment on your tap.
  • Turn off the water while brushing your teeth. Only turn the water on, when you need to clean your toothbrush.

Reduce, Reuse and Recycle

Call your municipal office to find a recycle location near you for items listed below:

  • Reduce electricity consumption. Turn off the lights when you leave a room, the TV when you are no longer watching it and the computer if you are not using it.
  • Collect newspapers, flyers, cardboard, pop cans, glass bottles and tin cans. Take them to the recycle centre in your community.
  • Clothes that are no longer worn, but are still in good condition are willingly accepted by organizations such as Salvation Army, women's and homeless shelters.
  • Unused furniture and furnishings are accepted by many next-to-new shops and you may even be compensated for them.
  • Used book stores are grateful to receive those books you've got collecting dust in your closet.
  • Don't throw away your used batteries, take them to the nearest recycling center.
  • Children's toys, clean and in good condition are accepted by many community organizations.
  • Old electronic items such as televisions, computers, fax machines, telephones, are accepted at community electronic recycling depots.
  • Disposal of paint cans and lacquers, etc can be made at many community facilities such as fire halls.
